Grain Surfboards Launches Bio•Logic ™ : A Breakthrough in Clean Surfboard Construction
York, Maine — 04/02/2026 —
After 21 years of building wooden surfboards, Grain Surfboards is introducing Bio•Logic, a new construction method that redefines how surfboards can be built—eliminating foam, fiberglass, and virtually all resin from the process.
Developed over several years and quietly tested in real surf conditions, Bio•Logic represents a fundamental shift away from conventional, petroleum-based surfboard manufacturing toward a system guided by natural materials and technical precision.
A Cleaner Way to Build Performance Surfboards
Bio•Logic boards are built and shaped using Maine-grown Northern White Cedar, FSCcertified plywood, natural cork, and 100% natural flax. Instead of a traditional fiberglass and resin lamination, Grain uses flax fabric vacuum bagged to the inside of the board—resulting in a board that is lighter, more flexible, and more responsive underfoot.“After more than two decades of refining wooden surfboards, we’ve reached a goal we’ve been chasing since day one,” said Grain founder, Mike laVecchia. “A performance board with zero foam, zero fiberglass, and virtually zero resin.”
Transparency as a Design Principle
In an industry often criticized for “greenwashing,” Grain is leaning into radical transparency. “Why do we say ‘virtually zero’ resin? Because we believe in being honest about our craft,” the team explains. “We’ve eliminated more then 99% of resin used in traditional glassing. What remains is just a few essential ounces necassary to install finboxes and leash cups.”
Award & Grant-Winning Innovation
Bio•Logic has already been recognized with the Trailblazer Award for Innovation at the Maine Outdoor Economy Summit, signaling its potential impact beyond surfing and into broader material innovation and sustainable manufacturing. Grain was also awarded a grant through the Maine Technology Institute helping to provide valuable research and development resources that the team used to perfect the materials and methods needed to make Bio•Logic boards available to surfers around the world.
Natural Materials. Modern Performance.
Each Bio•Logic board is designed, precision-cut, and assembled in Maine. The interior is sealed with flax fiber, while the exterior is finished with a plant-based hard-wax oil—creating a durable, repairable surface that truly brings out the natural tones of the wood. The result is a surfboard that feels “alive” in the water while dramatically reducing environmental impact.
Limited Beta Release
To introduce the technology, Grain Surfboards is releasing a limited “Founders’ Batch” of Bio•Logic boards. Each board carries the Founder’s Mark—a unique serial number honoring its founding principle: to create surfboards that have more impact on your surfing and less impact on the environment.
- Built-to-order with a 6–8 week turnaround
- Offered at the most competitive pricing in Grain’s history
- Open to surfers interested in testing and helping refine the future of the design
“We’re looking for thoughtful surfers that want to ride something new and help shape what comes next,” the team says. “This is a real opportunity to be part of a genuine shift in surfboard construction.”
