The Maine Outdoor Brands Student Advisory Board is designed to unite post-secondary students who are interested in pursuing careers in the outdoor industry. This collaborative group will advise Maine Outdoor Brands and act as ambassadors for their schools and communities while fostering a deeper understanding of the outdoor recreation industry in Maine.

  • Looks for feedback on what MOB is doing to highlight career pathways in the outdoors

  • Share your experiences from school and in the industry
  • Join informational sessions with industry professionals
  • Provide feedback and insights into MOB’s work 
  • Help represent your school and community at outdoor industry events
  • Develop a career-focused event at the annual Maine Outdoor Economy Summit


The Student Advisory Board will:

  1. Immerse members in the intricacies of the outdoor recreation industry and its economic significance in Maine, fostering subject matter expertise among participants.
  2. Facilitate connections with industry employers, successful entrepreneurs, and fellow students to enhance professional relationships and collaborative opportunities.
  3. Empower members to represent their schools and communities, advocating for outdoor recreation careers and experiences.
  4. Gather insights and suggestions from students to help Maine Outdoor Brands strengthen career pathways within the industry, including advising MOB on increasing use and exposure of our outdoor industry job board

Core Responsibilities 

Members will:

  • Attend virtual meetings once per month and participate in one in-person gathering per school year. 
    • Each one-hour monthly meeting will feature someone working in the outdoor industry in Maine and provide students a chance to ask questions and learn from folks in the field
  • Serve as ambassadors for their schools and communities by engaging others about the benefits of careers in outdoor recreation.
    • This might look like talking to local K-12 students about the power of the outdoors, attending career fairs, or speaking to decision makers about the importance of outdoor recreation.
  • Share knowledge and experiences gained from advisory group meetings with peers, professors, and relevant community members. 
    • This could include helping to write sections for our newsletter or helping to create social media posts
  • Connect with local outdoor businesses to create opportunities for career exposure and internships.
    • Create a map of outdoor recreation businesses in your area
    • Talk with business owners about how they started in the industry and if they’re willing to lend a hand to the next generation 
  • Maintain accountability and presence in meetings and events, contributing actively to discussions and group activities.
    • We’ll create a group agreement to identify how people best want to show up and work together.
  • Assist in planning a career networking event at the Maine Outdoor Economy Summit (MOES).

Format 

We’re hoping to meet with this group online once before the end of the 24/25 school year. Then starting back up in September, we’ll have monthly meetings (timing TBD) and an in-person gathering in January (at the Maine Outdoor Economy Summit).

We would like a 1-year commitment from all board members that could extend to 2 years if desired.

  • Monthly online meetings to foster continuous engagement and discussions.
  • Annual in-person gatherings for deeper collaboration, networking, and creativity.
  • Invite guest speakers from the outdoor industry to provide insights and knowledge sharing.
  • Organize an annual career fair event that showcases opportunities within the outdoor recreation industry and connects students and other job seekers with employers.
  • Students will receive a $1000 stipend for participation and receive complimentary admission to the Maine Outdoor Economy Summit
